About the Role:
The Oboe Teacher should be a highly capable musician who will play an important role in teaching music and developing the woodwind program across the College. As well, the Oboe Teacher should have excellent motivational skills evident in their teaching style and show commitment to inspiring appreciation and developing musical skills in students. This is a casual position and will work across both Junior School (Burke Hall) and Senior School.
Start date: Term 1, 2026
Core Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teaching individual Oboe students ranging in age from 10 to 18 years old and from beginner to VCE level.
- Teaching the Year 5 Instrumental Curriculum Program (Thursday mornings).
- Liaising with the Head of Woodwind and other ensemble directors to support Oboe players in the ensembles.
- Preparing students for concerts, soirees and exams.
- Directing, conducting and assisting with other ensembles as required, including running Oboe/Woodwind sectionals.
- Tutor Chamber Groups (e.g. Oboe Ensemble).
- Attending meetings and training as required.
- Assisting with concerts as required.
- Assisting with basic maintenance of woodwind instruments.
- Writing semester reports.
- Liaising with the Coordinator of JS Music and the Head of Music on necessary matters

Selection Criteria:
- Experience in teaching a wide range of students and the ability to use a variety of different pedagogical approaches.
- Ability to build a good rapport and relationships with students, parents, and other staff.
- Experience in working within a school environment (preferred but not essential).
- Experience in group teaching as part of an instrumental curriculum program (preferred but not essential)
- Availability on a Thursday morning for the Year 5 Instrumental Curriculum Program.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
- Established conducting skills and ability to run rehearsals with large ensembles at all levels (preferred but not essential).
- Demonstrated understanding of how to retain and build oboe numbers within the overall music program.
- Demonstrated knowledge of, adherence to and leadership for child safety, the Child Safe
- Standards and an exceptional culture of child safety.
- Well-developed people skills coupled with strong communication and interpersonal skills, especially for the benefit of staff, students and parents.
- VIT Registration is desirable (but not essential).
